“Two years ago, people from India asked us: “Why don’t you do something for us because we have a half-hour time difference?” said Ulris Herzog, chairman of Oris. “We started to develop this movement. It represents the company’s values. It shows our history of sports manufacturing and innovation with practical applications.” Herzog refers to the brand’s philosophy of always creating something that is meaningful to the user, for instance, the functional watches. Functionality has always been one of the brand’s most important priorities, and they have consistently adhered to the internal manufacturing movement for several years.

Oris’ Progress in Watchmaking

Following the history of the development mechanism in the first few years after the brand was founded in 1904, Oris decided to re-create the movement during the celebration of its 110th anniversary in 2014. That was when Oris Calibre 110 was born. Calibre 110 marks the return of a mechanical watchmaking alliance, and the brand has no intention of stopping there. “The power reserve for the first sport was 10 days, without date function. Then there was Calibre 111, with date function, and it will continue to 112, 113,” Herzog proudly explained, he talked about the brand’s annual internal caliber, each of them are with a unique development.

Although most of the internal movements have been introduced in the Oris Artelier collection, the Calibre 114 became the first movement to be launched in the Big Crown collection, which is an appropriate choice because its key feature is the GMT function, originally designing for pilots. As the name suggests, this collection is equipped with a big crown that allows users to easily adjust even with aviation gloves. This function is especially convenient for the Calibre 114 version because the movement is manually wound. The knurled edge of the big crown complements the coin-edge ring of the bezel, along with a smooth top ring and a brushed or polished surface.

The Oris internal movement provides a 10-day power reserve with a stainless steel case that is water resistant to 100 meters. With a diameter of 44 mm, it is a reasonable size due to the features in the movement. The dial features an anthracite grey or black dial with Arabic numerals, and you can see the small seconds dial and date aperture at 9 o’clock and Oris’ patented non-linear power reserve indicator. In addition to the central hour and minute hands, there is a GMT central pointer with a unique red arrow pointing to the 24-hour time scale, and there are also some dots indicating half an hour between hours. The SuperLuminova and hour numbers on the central chronograph hand ensure optimum readability even in low light conditions.

This powerful watch has ended the Indian pursuit of the ideal GMT watch, which undoubtedly provides visual value for a variety of aesthetic feelings.
